The first step is to choose the type of yarn you want to use. The amount of yarn needed depends on the size and quality of rug. The yarn is prepared by cutting it into strips of the desired length for the rug.

There are basically two ways in which rugs are made; hooking or braid and sew. Hooking results in wonderfully compact and luxurious rugs while braiding brings out the rustic element. Next, a base is chosen carefully, especially for the knotted rug as this is where the yarn is weaved and it acts as a loom. The base should be sturdy enough so as to extend the life of the rug.

The braided strips of wool are then sewn together and the appropriate finishing done to complete the rug. The knotted yarn is brushed and trimmed to the required length after the desired design has been weaved onto the base. The design may incorporate one or several types of yarn of different color, texture and thickness.
