A woolen rug on your floor is a design statement and it also adds the much needed warmth into your living spaces. They are easily available and the beauty of it is that you can have custom-made woolen rugs for your home. The art of making woolen rugs for your living spaces is not new in Kenya and home makers have been in the business of beautifying their homes with this wonderful works of art for decades. Kenya is endowed with a variety of woolen yarn in diverse shades, textures and thicknesses that are used to make these rugs.
The first step is to choose the type of yarn you want to use. The amount of yarn needed depends on the size and quality of rug. A plush rug will use up more wool since it has longer fiber for the desired effect. The shape is another important determinant and all this adds up to the variety available in woolen rugs in Kenya. The yarn is prepared by cutting it into strips of the desired length for the rug.
There are basically two ways in which rugs are made; hooking or braid and sew. Hooking results in wonderfully compact and luxurious rugs while braiding brings out the rustic element. Braiding also can be done using a variety of woolen articles including blankets. Next, a base is chosen carefully, especially for the knotted rug as this is where the yarn is weaved and it acts as a loom. The base should be sturdy enough so as to extend the life of the rug.
The braided strips of wool are then sewn together and the appropriate finishing done to complete the rug. The knotted yarn is brushed and trimmed to the required length after the desired design has been weaved onto the base. The design may incorporate one or several types of yarn of different color, texture and thickness.
