In fashion, vertical stripes make one look leaner and taller.  The same applies to home design.  Painting vertical stripes on your walls will make them seem to stretch upwards into the sky.  Choose coordinating shades of color instead of going with colors that contrast sharply to avoid giving the room a chaotic look!  This works especially well if your rooms have low ceilings.
